Privacy Policy – Digital Javelina

This Privacy Policy explains how Digital Javelina (“Digital Javelina”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) handles information when you visit digitaljavelina.com (the “Site”). Digital Javelina is a personal technology blog operated by Michael Henry.

Our approach is to collect as little as possible. We do not use advertising networks, sell your data, or build advertising profiles about you. To understand how the Site is used, we rely on a single analytics service, described in the Analytics section below.

Information we collect

Comments

If you leave a comment, we collect the information shown in the comment form (your name, email address, and optional website), along with your IP address and browser user-agent string to help with spam detection. Your email address is not displayed publicly. If you use an email associated with the Gravatar service, your profile picture may be shown next to your comment; Gravatar’s own privacy policy applies to that service.

Messages you send us

If you email us at hello@digitaljavelina.com, we receive your email address and the contents of your message, and we keep them so we can respond.

Server logs

The Site is hosted by WP Engine, and traffic to it is routed through Cloudflare, which provides content delivery and security filtering. Like virtually all web hosts and network providers, WP Engine and Cloudflare automatically record standard server log data, including IP addresses, browser type, referring pages, and the date and time of requests. This information is used to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the Site.

Cookies and local storage

If you leave a comment, WordPress may set cookies to remember your name, email, and website so you do not have to re-enter them next time. If you sign in to the Site as an administrator, WordPress sets session cookies. Cloudflare sets a short-lived security cookie (__cf_bm) to tell human visitors from automated bots. Cloudflare states that this cookie does not correspond to any user ID or other identifier in the Site, and that a separate one is generated for each website you visit, so it is not used to track you from site to site or from session to session. It expires after 30 minutes of inactivity. See Cloudflare’s cookie documentation for details. We do not set advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

The Site remembers your light or dark appearance preference using your browser’s local storage. That value stays on your device and is never sent to us.

Embedded content from other sites

Articles may include embedded content, such as videos or code examples. Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if you had visited that other website, and those sites may collect data about you, use cookies, and monitor your interaction with that content under their own policies.

Analytics

We use Jetpack Stats, a feature of the Jetpack plugin provided by Automattic Inc., to understand in aggregate how the Site is used, for example page views, referring sites, and general visitor counts. We do not use it for advertising, we do not sell the information it collects, and we do not use it to build a profile of you across other websites.

When you view a page, Jetpack Stats records your IP address, your browser user-agent string and language, the address of the page you viewed, the referring address, a timestamp, and a country code derived from your IP address. If you happen to be signed in to a WordPress.com account, your WordPress.com user ID and username are recorded as well. That information is sent to and processed by Automattic on our behalf; see Automattic’s Privacy Policy and the Jetpack Stats documentation for what it collects and how long it is kept.

Jetpack Stats does not set cookies to identify anonymous visitors. We have enabled the Do Not Track option for Jetpack Stats, so if your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, your page views are not recorded. You can turn Do Not Track on in your browser’s privacy settings.

To operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Site.

How we share information

We do not sell or rent your personal information. We share information with our service providers only to the extent needed to run the Site: WP Engine (hosting), Cloudflare (content delivery and security), and Automattic (Jetpack Stats analytics). We also share information where required to comply with the law or to protect our rights.

Data retention

Approved comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely so that follow-up replies can be recognized and displayed. Email correspondence is kept for as long as needed to handle your request.

Your rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of the personal information we hold about you, including comments you have left. To make a request, email hello@digitaljavelina.com. We may need to retain certain information for legal or security reasons.

Children

The Site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above.
